BUNGAKUZA THEATER COMPANY

Three cities. One costume. One universe.
This time, I painted with words.

To express and communicate each character, we discussed, revised, and rediscussed — within a limited timeframe. Redrawing every costume sketch by hand each time was simply inefficient. That’s when I realized: what this process needed was not my drawing ability.

And something else became clear — because we couldn’t meet in person, what mattered most was the ability to convey a detailed visual world without lengthy explanation. AI became that language.

When I design a costume, I always begin with one question: why does this person say these words?

That’s where Fefu began. I read the play over and over, pulling apart her habits, her contradictions, her beautiful madness — and built the first plan from there.

Then the director said: “I can’t feel Maco in this. Be freer. Enjoy it.”

Those words set me free.

Because we couldn’t meet in person, we chose words carefully. When words weren’t enough, I turned to AI. New York, Tokyo, Kobe — three cities colliding and laughing through a screen, again and again, until we arrived at something true.

This was the first time I painted a world not with paint and pencil, but with language. And for me, it opened a new door.
